El Diablo Cocktail

El Diablo Cocktail
INGREDIENTS
  • 1 ½ oz tequila reposado
  • ½ oz crème de cassis (or substitute Chambord or crème de mure)
  • ¾ oz lime juice
  • 3 oz ginger beer
HOW TO PREPARE

Build it right in the glass. Many modern recipes recipes indicate to shake and strain this drink. But why spend the extra effort? Make it as a traditional highball cocktail, right in the glass (that’s the way Trader Vic’s original 1946 recipe indicates).Use tequila reposado. The vanilla and oak notes from aged tequila reposado add just the right sophistication to the flavor. Use an inexpensive to mid-range reposado here (save the premium stuff for sipping). If all you have is tequila blanco, it works too!

El Diablo Cocktail TIPS

Build Fresh & Garnish Bold

Build your El Diablo directly in the glass over fresh ice to keep it crisp and effervescent—no need to shake, preserving the ginger beer’s fizz. Use a good-quality reposado tequila to add smooth vanilla and oak depth. For garnish, add a lime wedge and a few blackberries or a sprig of mint for a vibrant, aromatic touch that complements the cassis.
